Sai Kung is like the gold mine of seafood in the back garden of Hong Kong, along with beautiful hiking trails and beaches. On the coast of Sai Kung you'll find a cluster of local seafood gems, one of them known as Chuen Kee Seafood Restaurant. There you'll see six feet tall aquariums and tanks of giant fish weighing five times as much as an average human.
Chuen Kee has everything you could want in a seafood restaurant, with a wide assortment on display - from lobsters and crabs to prawns, mantis "pissing" shrimp, cuttlefish, and more. You can find almost any local or imported seafood here. You get to choose your own live seafood right on the spot and request to have them cooked however you like, with suggestions from the menu and the friendly fish tank guy.
There's a base price to pay for the seafood, plus an add-on fee for cooking the food. It's worthwhile to get a table outside to soak in the lively ambiance with a comfortable breeze along the harbour. And don't worry about having to wait, because these handy men can put together tables like lego within seconds.
This is a great way to experience how to eat fresh seafood à la Hong Kong. If you're visiting, it's worth the trip about an hour and half outside of the city. There's a certain charm about Sai Kung that's not to be missed! The razor clams and lobster were especially my favourites, and all the other dishes were cooked exceptionally well. Be prepared to spend a lot, because you can be in for a very expensive dinner.
